Emergency Communications Nurse System
The Emergency Communications Nurse System makes positive impacts on the non-urgent 9-1-1 calls that the Dispatch Center receives.
The Emergency Communication Nurse System has safely and successfully triaged low acuity patients to telehealth visits, facilities such as urgent cares, doctor’s offices, pharmacies, behavioral health centers, hospitals and has even provided direction for patients to care for themselves in their homes when medically appropriate. When callers connect with this program, a portion of the unnecessary emergency responses, ambulance transports and hospital emergency department visits are decreased. In addition, when callers are directed to less acute settings, health care costs decrease for the caller and the insurance carrier.

CONFIRE Nurse Services FAQ’s
What is the CONFIRE Emergency Communications Nurse Program?
The CONIFRE Emergency Communication Nurse System (ECNS) is a concierge level service that provides a secondary triage for low acuity 911 callers. Licensed registered nurses use over 200 evidence-based protocols to assess callers and direct them to the most appropriate care. Our Emergency Communication Nurses assist callers in finding the closest and most appropriate care option, and can also assist with transportation, when needed. This preserves emergency services for critical cases and reduces unnecessary ER visits and wait times.
When should I call 911?
Call 911 for serious medical emergencies, in-progress crimes, or fires. Examples include unconsciousness, difficulty breathing, chest pain, severe allergic reactions, or uncontrollable bleeding. If uncertain, call 911. The call taker will ask specific questions to prioritize your situation and connect you to appropriate care.
If I call 911, will EMS providers still respond and transport me to a hospital?
For life-threatening emergencies, 911 will send first responders who may take you directly to the hospital. For non-emergencies, you may speak with a CONFIRE Emergency Communication Nurse who will assess your symptoms over the phone and determine the appropriate care, as well as the most appropriate way to access care.
How does CONFIRE 911 service determine if my call will be handled by the Nurse?
A certified Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD) will ask you questions based on standardized protocols to determine the most appropriate care and resources. If your condition is emergent or life-threatening, emergency services will be dispatched. If a registered nurse is better suited for your situation, the call will be transferred to the Emergency Communication Nurse.
What happens if the CONFIRE Nurse determines that my condition requires transport to an emergency room?
If the Emergency Communication Nurse deems your condition emergent, requiring ER treatment or immediate EMS assessment, an ambulance will be dispatched.
What are the qualifications of the CONFIRE Nurses?
CONFIRE Emergency Communication Nurses are licensed registered nurses who have acute care experience, as well as certifications in both Emergency Medical Dispatcher and Emergency Communication Nurse System.
What happens if I talk to the CONFIRE Nurse but still want to be transported to the hospital?
The Emergency Communication Nurse will help determine how soon you should access care, where you should go, and the best way to access it.
